“All the world was shining from those hills…” (2021)

Acrylic, spray paint on high-quality paper

Troy Ramos

11 x 14

I’m endlessly fascinated with the repetition of shapes, particularly if those shapes are very similar to each other. I’m also interested in the spacing of objects, particularly when the placement is subconscious. Almost everything is subconscious. I certainly try to allow for some thought. But I think thought gets in the way quite often.

Sometimes these works pull me in the direction they want to go. It’s a balance. And with this work I think it wanted to be a portrait to a certain degree. Even if that’s not where I wanted to go, it becomes a balance of the relationship between the person creating something and what’s being created. And I think that’s the case in this work (as it is with others).

This work is also part of a series of three works which were created in the same moment of time and have a very similar approach and perspective (and result perhaps). The other works are “When I was 36 and on my own…” (2021) and “All the world was shining from those hills…” (2021). Another strong element of inspiration is that they were all created while listening to a Jackson Browne song. This happens quite often with me. If I’m listening to something that I like and everything seems to be working in the studio, I quite often listen to the same song or the same album over and over and over again. It almost becomes a part of the creation of the works.
