Acrylic, Pencil on Paper

2020
Surrounded by uncertainty, yet with a growing optimism, this work emerged. It is part of a set of three works now referred to as ‘the Daffodils’ because of its connection to the William Wordsworth poem “I wandered lonely as a cloud..”. Originally only numbered as #44, it’s only a year later that this poem is finally recognized as the inspiration for the work.
This poem’s theme of the relationship between the individual and the natural world parallels the state of the artist in quarantine, simultaneously limited and secured by long walks as the only form of contact with the world.
The elements in this painting, the spatial distances, the overlapping of colors and the feel of being simultaneously pulled and pushed, illustrates the tension between isolation and seeking comfort. It is in this state that the work begins to open itself to ideas about what it meant to be in the state of the unknown.
